What does yagé mean?

Yagé is a plant-based psyche tea and can make a person see, hear, smell, feel or taste things that aren’t really there or cause the person to experience things differently from how they are in reality.

Nomenclature and Preparation
Aya means “spirit, soul”, “corpse, dead body”, and waska means “rope” and “woody vine”, “liana”. Yagé, also commonly called yagé in South America. It is a brown-reddish drink with a strong taste and smell.
The brew uses in ceremonies among the indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin as a traditional spiritual medicine. The tea is brewed for several hours by infusing the pounded stems of Banisteriopsis caapi in combination with Psychotria viridis or other plants.
Traditionally, a shaman or curandero is an experienced healer who leads Yagé ceremonies and he/she prepares the brew by boiling torn leaves of the Psychotria viridis shrub and stalks of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine in water. It cleaned and smashed before boil to increase the extraction of its medicinal compounds
When the brew has reduced to the shaman’s liking, the water is removed and reserved, leaving behind the plant material. This process repeates until a highly concentrated liquid is produced and once cooled, the brew is strained to remove impurities.
What does Ayahuasca contain?
It contains several alkaloids that act as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Psychotria viridian shrub is another ingredient in yagé and contains psychoactive, dimethyltryptamine (DMT) that needs MAOIs and it’s orally active. DMT can enter the circulatory system and penetrate the blood–brain barrier, thereby producing its effects.
Yagé has used for a number of centuries by traditional healers as a medicine and in religious ceremonies. Interest in the therapeutic benefits of yagé has been increasing in Western countries and treats to help alcohol, drug dependence.
