Our journey began in 2017, when we made the life-changing decision to leave our familiar world behind and start a new chapter in Colombia. What we thought would be a simple adventure gradually became a lifelong passion for discovering the extraordinary cultures, traditions, and craftsmanship of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon.
Over the years, we traveled through remote villages, crossed rivers, followed jungle trails, and shared unforgettable moments with communities whose way of life has remained deeply connected to nature for countless generations. Every journey taught us something new, but one experience would forever change the course of our lives.
That journey took us deep into the Brazilian Amazon, to the remote state of Acre, near the town of Tarauacá, home to several indigenous communities. We were told the bus ride from Rio Branco would take around fifteen hours. Instead, it became an unforgettable eighteen-hour journey through endless rainforest, muddy roads, tropical storms, and landscapes unlike anything we had ever experienced.
When we finally arrived, we discovered something far more valuable than we had expected.
Although very few visitors ever reached these villages, we were welcomed not as tourists, but as friends. The warmth, generosity, and genuine hospitality of the people immediately made us feel at home. It was impossible not to admire the deep respect they showed for one another, for their ancestors, and for the forest that continues to sustain their way of life.
During our time with the Huni Kuin (Kaxinawá) people, as well as other indigenous communities throughout the Amazon, we began to understand that their craftsmanship was much more than beautiful handmade objects.
Every necklace carried a story.
Every woven pattern represented a symbol.
Every feather, bead, carving, and natural material reflected generations of inherited knowledge, identity, spirituality, and cultural memory.
These were not simply products.
They were living expressions of cultures that have survived for centuries by preserving traditions passed from one generation to the next.
It was during those moments that we made a promise to ourselves: we would return, spend more time learning from these communities, and find a respectful way to share a small part of their remarkable cultural heritage with the rest of the world.
On our long journey home, somewhere between the rainforest and civilization, the idea for Ancient Joys was born.
Our vision was never to create just another online store.
We wanted to build a bridge between cultures.
A place where people could discover authentic handcrafted creations while learning about the traditions, artistry, and stories behind them. A place where every item represented not only exceptional craftsmanship but also the people, history, and cultural identity from which it originated.
Today, Ancient Joys brings together carefully selected handcrafted pieces from indigenous artisans and traditional communities whenever possible. Our collection includes traditional jewelry, ceremonial accessories, ethnographic art, botanical preparations, handcrafted tools, and other cultural creations that celebrate the diversity and richness of Amazonian heritage.
Every purchase directly contributes to supporting artisan families, encouraging traditional craftsmanship, and helping preserve cultural knowledge that might otherwise disappear over time. We believe that protecting cultural heritage also means creating sustainable opportunities for the communities who continue to keep these traditions alive.
